Executive Summary

The accumulation (ACC) of carbon dioxide and heat in the Earth’s atmosphere equals the input (IN) minus the output (OUT). Currently, human activity and especially the burning of fossil fuels is causing CO2 to accumulate in the Earth’s atmosphere at the rate of eight billion tonnes per year (about 3% of the total). The temperature of the atmosphere is rising by about 1 degree Celsius every 20 years and the potential consequences are catastrophic, according to the United Nations. Over the last 200 years, trillions of dollars have been invested into the fossil fuel economy: it is this economy that we have inherited. A new era of investment is now beginning to emerge. Alternative and renewable energy, and sustainability are concepts at the forefront of the minds of businessmen and industrialists.
